Usually used for rebuilding severely-damaged or broken teeth, crowns are a type of dental restorations that work by covering the surface of the tooth completely and effectively. In addition to this, these dental crowns can also improve physical appearance and strengthen teeth. Skilled dentists can easily make dental crowns using material such as porcelain, ceramic or metal.
Although crowns can significantly and easily improve a patient’s cosmetic appearance, it would still be best if you consult your dentist regarding other restorative treatment options. The procedure for dental crowns usually involves the grinding of a large area of the tooth to be treated and can be considered to be invasive.
In most cases, crowns are the logical choice when the tooth’s ability to support the restoration is compromised. If not, patients should consider veneers or even dental bonding to restore their teeth to their formal glory.
Dental Crown Procedure:
If you and your dentist decide on a dental crown, the procedure for this will begin with the grinding of the affected tooth, removing all decay and signs of damage. Because of the discomfort, local anaesthesia is usually applied. Once the tooth has been grinded to the desired shape, your dentist will take an impression. This impression will be quickly sent to the laboratory where a crown will be made to fit your tooth perfectly. This stage in the entire process usually takes about 3 weeks. Your dentist might give you a temporary dental crown while waiting for your custom-made crown. You will be asked to return to the dental clinic as soon as your crown is completed. Your dentist will check for correct fitness, colour match and overall appearance. If everything meets your dentist’s standards, then the crown will be cemented into place.
On the other hand, a CEREC-equipped dental clinic will only involve waiting for about an hour while your crown is made on site. Once completed, it will be fitted and cemented on the same day.
Well-made dental crowns are known to last for as long as 15 years.
