Dental implants are titanium posts, which are surgically placed in your jawbone. The procedure requires that the posts fuse with your jawbone in order to fully-support the crowns, dentures or even bridges. A full reconstruction may require several dental implants. There are actually just a few dentists who specialize in dental implants. This procedure does not involve the damaging of the other teeth tissue. In fact, it maintains the integrity and strength of your jawbone, resulting to successful restoration.
Dental Implant Procedure
Because the procedure is complicated, dental implants should only be performed by highly-qualified dentists. It is recommended that you first check the dentist’s experience and credentials in order to avoid problems. The procedure requires local anaesthesia and sometimes, IV sedation or even general anaesthesia.
The procedure for dental implants start with the gum cut and opened. Using a drill, a small hole will be drilled into the exposed jawbone. The titanium-made implant will now be attached to the jawbone. After this is accomplished, the gum will be stitched back, covering the implant entirely. If in case your jaw bone is not sufficient enough to support the implant, your dentist might consider a bone graft or a mini implant.
On average, it will take about six months before the implant is completely healed and has successfully fused with your jawbone. In the meantime, your dentist might ask you to wear temporary dentures. Once the implant has healed completely, you will undergo another surgery again where a post will be attached to your implant, together with a crown (temporary). After waiting for another six weeks, a permanent crown can now be fitted and attached to the dental implant.
These dental implants can last for as long as 20 years, thus providing a long-term solution for lost or missing teeth.
