Also known as endodontics, root canal dental treatments are usually required when the tooth pulp is infected due to decay or injury, impeding normal blood supply. If the pulp continues to be infected, the entire root canal might be involved, leading to abscess. With a root canal procedure, the infection can be treated and there is no need to remove the teeth.
The goal of the root canal treatment is to eradicate all signs of infection. The root will then be cleaned thoroughly and filled up to avoid the recurrence of the infection. Since the procedure is quite complicated, only a skilled dentist is qualified to do the procedure. In most cases, it will involve several visits before the entire procedure is completed.
The first visit will involve the removal of the infected tooth pulp and the drainage of any traces of abscess. Once the root canal is cleaned, it will be shaped and prepared for temporary filling. This filling allows the tooth to settle and will be checked on the next visit. If all the infection is cleared by that time, permanent filling is placed in the tooth.
